First-time ETF investor says simple advice can be hard to follow

A Handelsblatt journalist started investing in exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, in August 2025.

He turned to them after ending a private pension policy that had produced only 1,000 euros in gains after more than 15 years and over 20,000 euros in contributions.

He wanted a lower-cost way to save for retirement and considered socially responsible funds, but said they carried high fees.

ETFs were presented as a simpler, lower-cost option for long-term investing, though their value can rise and fall.

The basic advice was to choose a low-fee online bank, set up regular investments in a broadly spread ETF and leave the money invested for years.

In practice, he found choices such as which bank and fund to use, and whether to invest a lump sum, were not straightforward.

He says he learned to focus on decisions that directly mattered to him, while much of investing remained unfamiliar.
