Azerbaijani club disputes coach’s claims of players injured in elevator accident

Gence BC, a basketball club based in Ganja, Azerbaijan, lost a FIBA Europe Cup game to Esenler Erokspor.

After the game, coach Martin Knezevic said five players had been injured in an elevator accident at the team hotel but still had to play.

The club confirmed that the elevator had malfunctioned but denied that players were injured.

Four of the five players Knezevic named played in the game, while Bakari Camara was reportedly left out for tactical reasons.

Gence also said it had not asked FIBA to postpone the game.

The club issued Knezevic an official warning and said another similar incident would lead to his contract being terminated.

The dispute leaves the coach’s account and the club’s account of the incident in conflict.
