Freelance writer uses self-hosted apps to replace paid work tools

A freelance writer turned his home lab, a server setup he runs himself, into part of his daily work.

He installed Actual Budget to track business expenses and manage spending without his paid budgeting app.

He uses Baserow to organize projects and client work, replacing a service that cost him $10 a month.

He also set up OpenCloud on his home server for storing and sharing files across his devices.

These apps are self-hosted, meaning he runs them on hardware he owns rather than relying entirely on a paid cloud service.

The change helped him cut recurring costs and made the time and expense of maintaining his home lab feel more worthwhile.

Some advanced Baserow features still require paid licenses.
