Lula proposes university aid with R$700 monthly payments

Lula proposed a university version of Pé-de-Meia on October 13, as a plan for a possible next term if he is re-elected.

The proposal would pay eligible students R$700 a month for 10 months each year and add R$2,500 to a savings account annually.

That savings would be available after graduation, and students would need to pass each academic year to receive the annual deposit.

The plan would cover students at federal and state public universities and Prouni scholarship holders at private institutions, with about 1 million young people as the intended reach.

It is meant to help students afford university costs and reduce withdrawals linked to financial hardship; the projected cost is R$4.6 billion, with funds expected from the Pre-Salt Social Fund.

Selection rules and an implementation schedule have not been announced, so the proposal is not yet a running program.
