Eight South Korean public housing projects face delays
South Korea’s state-run Korea Land and Housing Corporation, known as LH, has eight delayed public housing projects outside the capital region.
Together, the projects are planned to provide 51,060 homes.
Some have struggled for years: the Changwon Taebaek site was designated in July 2018, and the Jeju Gimnyeong site in December 2018.
Lower housing demand, rising construction costs and a weak regional property market have contributed to the delays.
LH reviews individual projects, but it has no separate rules for regularly reassessing long-delayed projects or deciding when to restart, change or cancel them.
Delays can also restrict residents’ property rights; in the Sanjeong district, land transactions have faced restrictions since March 2021.
A lawmaker has called on LH to set clear rules for delayed projects and measures to limit harm to residents, but no specific next steps are given.
