SPD and Left back coalition talks with Greens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The SPD and the Left party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have approved talks to form a government with the Greens.
The Greens are due to decide on Saturday at a party meeting in Rostock, and talks could begin on Monday if they agree.
This would be the state’s first government made up of three parties.
The AfD won the most seats in the September 20 election, but its 32 seats do not give it a majority in the 71-seat state parliament.
The SPD, Greens and Left together have 39 seats, enough to govern if they reach an agreement.
Their proposed priorities include investing in modernisation, keeping childcare free, improving schools and supporting all hospital sites.
The parties also want more public involvement and an inquiry into far-right networks; their state party meetings will decide on any final coalition agreement, and a new state premier must be elected by November 17 at the latest.
