Archaeologists uncover remains of East German border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie
Archaeologists found parts of the former East German border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin.
The remains include sections of walls, asphalt, a control post foundation and a vehicle barrier.
The discoveries could help explain the site’s history, but officials have not decided whether visitors will be able to see them.
For now, the uncovered areas will be covered again to help preserve them.
Archaeologists uncovered remains of the former East German border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin.
The finds include sections of boundary walls, asphalt surfaces, the foundation of a border troops command post dating from 1985 to 1989, and parts of a vehicle barrier built after the October 1961 tank confrontation.
The excavations took place in recent months on a plot at the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse, as plans are being made for a new education and memorial site.
It is not yet known whether or how the remains will be preserved and made accessible to visitors; the exposed areas are due to be covered again after a further inspection on Sunday.
The Berlin Wall Foundation said the finds are significant historical evidence of a site that has changed substantially since 1990.
