Zelensky says Ukraine can hold elections after a 60-day ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine could organize elections if Russia agrees to a full 60-day ceasefire.

He made the offer after U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine should have a new president.

Zelensky said choosing the country's leader is up to Ukrainians.

Ukraine's law bars elections during martial law, which was declared after Russia's full-scale invasion.

Zelensky has also said people in Russian-occupied areas must be able to take part and voters need to be safe.

The dispute matters because the war is continuing, and Ukraine says it needs a pause in fighting to hold elections.

Zelensky said Ukraine remains ready to defend itself and hopes to keep working with the United States and Europe to stop Russia.
