Flooding strands about 70 runners at Utah ultramarathon before evacuation

About 70 runners in Utah’s Moab 240 ultramarathon were stranded by flooding on the course and later evacuated.

The flooding and other dangerous conditions were linked to the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel.

Race organizers said all runners were safe and accounted for after the rescue effort.

The local sheriff’s office worked with organizers, who sent shuttles and personnel to pick up participants.

Organizers canceled the race because strong winds, heavy rain, falling trees and freezing temperatures made it unsafe to continue.

The storm’s remnants were still moving across Utah on Monday, and a flood watch remained in effect across most of the state through Monday afternoon.
