Amateur runner dies after collapsing near finish of Seoul half-marathon

Yoo Ji-won, an amateur runner and KAIST graduate student, died after collapsing during the Seoul Race in South Korea.

She fell ill at the 20.6-kilometre point of the half-marathon on the morning of 11 October, about 500 metres from the finish.

She received emergency care at the scene and was taken by ambulance to a medical facility.

She remained in hospital and did not return home before her death, according to a friend who corrected false claims about her condition.

Ji-won had become known among runners for strong results, including finishing a full marathon in under three hours.

The race organisers expressed condolences and said they would examine the circumstances and take any necessary follow-up measures.

Her cause of death has not been made public.
