Boston Marathon’s 2027 cutoff is the fastest in race history

The Boston Athletic Association has set the cutoff for the 2027 Boston Marathon at 5 minutes and 17 seconds.

Runners must meet an age- and gender-based qualifying time to apply, but meeting that standard does not guarantee entry.

Because there are only so many places, applicants are ranked by how far they ran under their qualifying time.

This year, 33,649 runners applied, and 24,630 were accepted.

The cutoff means the effective qualifying times were 5 minutes and 17 seconds faster than the published standards, the largest adjustment in the race’s history.

The association had changed the qualifying period and added penalties for some downhill races to limit the cutoff, but it remained high.

Runners who meet the published standard still cannot know for sure whether they will get in until applications are ranked.
