Nigeria’s House speaker sets 100-day plan and warns against campaign distractions
Nigeria’s House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen proposed a 100-day legislative programme as the House resumed work in Abuja after its annual recess.
The plan aims to speed up pending bills and committee reports, with major legislative business scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Tajudeen warned lawmakers not to let campaigning for the 2027 elections distract them from their duties to constituents.
The House is in the final phase of its current term, and he said members should complete priority work before the Assembly ends.
The House has passed 363 of the 2,747 bills it received by the middle of June 2026, according to Tajudeen; he said it had completed 65 to 70 per cent of its main legislative targets.
He identified proposed state police and reserved seats for women as key priorities, alongside other constitutional changes that require engagement with the Senate and state assemblies.
These proposals would allow states to establish their own police services and aim to increase women’s representation in legislatures.
The proposed 100-day plan is intended to clear outstanding work, while the House also plans to publish a scorecard before the Assembly ends.
