Hungary removes anti-LGBT+ provisions from 2021 law
On Tuesday, Hungary’s parliament voted to remove anti-LGBT+ provisions from a child-protection law passed in 2021.
The vote was 139 in favour and 51 against.
The law, adopted under former leader Viktor Orban, had barred references to homosexuality and gender identity to minors.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar took office in May, and this is the first significant reversal of the restrictions since then.
The European Union had condemned the 2021 law, which Magyar says the changes will bring into line with European law.
A rights group called the removal of limits on access to LGBT+ content an important, positive step.
Magyar has described the changes as strengthening child-protection rules regardless of sexual orientation, rather than restoring LGBT+ rights.
Hungary’s parliament voted on October 13 to remove anti-LGBT+ provisions from a 2021 child protection law.
The measure passed by 139 votes to 51.
The provisions had barred references to homosexuality and gender identity to minors.
The vote is the first significant reversal of restrictions imposed under former leader Viktor Orban since Peter Magyar took power in May.
Magyar said the changes would bring Hungary into line with European law, while presenting them as strengthening child protection rather than restoring LGBT+ rights.
