Philippine Senate accepts withdrawal of three charges against Sara Duterte
The Philippine Senate approved prosecutors’ request to drop three charges against Vice-President Sara Duterte on Tuesday.
The impeachment case began with allegations including misuse of confidential funds, bribery and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the first lady and a former House speaker.
The sole remaining charge concerns unexplained wealth, which senators will decide on.
Prosecutors have presented evidence since July and said it was compelling enough to remove Duterte from office.
The withdrawal narrows the issues before the impeachment court, while Duterte’s lawyer said it was unfair because her side could not present its case on the dropped allegations.
A conviction could disqualify Duterte from public office, including a run for president in 2028.
The Philippine Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, approved the prosecution’s withdrawal of three of the four charges against Vice-President Sara Duterte.
The remaining issue for senators to rule on is the allegation that she amassed unexplained wealth.
Lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro said the evidence was “substantial and compelling” to remove Duterte from office.
Duterte’s lawyer argued that withdrawing the charges was unfair because the defence would be unable to present its case on those allegations.
The trial could affect Duterte’s hopes of running for president in 2028.
