Brazil Senate committee expected to vote on public security amendment

Brazil Senate committee expected to vote on public security amendment

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says a Senate committee is expected to vote on a pending item in a proposed constitutional amendment on public security on Wednesday, October 14.

The committee approved the proposal’s main text in early September, but procedural issues have kept it from moving to a full Senate vote.

Lula’s government says the amendment would give constitutional status to Brazil’s unified public security system and two security and prison funds.

It would also set out the roles of federal, state and municipal authorities in public security.

The proposal is controversial because some opponents worry that federal authorities could interfere with state police forces.

Lula says he will create a Ministry of Public Security if the amendment is approved.

A government coordinator said an urgent request for a full Senate debate could follow the committee vote.
