São Paulo officers removed from duty after 20-year-old is fatally shot

Gustavo Munis de Santana, 20, died during a police encounter in Moema, a neighborhood in southern São Paulo.

Police said officers fired about 45 times, and a medical examination found 27 bullet wounds.

The officers said they mistook his cellphone for a gun.

Preliminary investigations say emergency services had been called after a report that a young man threatened to shoot himself.

The officers involved have been removed from operational duties, and a military police inquiry has been opened.

Their weapons and Gustavo’s cellphone were seized for forensic examination, and body-camera footage has been requested.

Civil and military police are investigating how the death occurred.
