Centenary events to promote K.V. Thiruvengadam’s approach to medicine

A year-long celebration of physician and teacher K.V. Thiruvengadam begins on October 11, 2026, in his centenary year.

Known as KVT, he was born in 1926 and taught medicine for 31 years at colleges in Chennai and later at private institutions.

He specialised in chest medicine, allergies and infectious diseases, and published nearly 100 research papers.

He received the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Dr. B.C. Roy Award for Eminent Medical Teacher.

The events aim to carry his approach into medical education: listen closely to patients, examine them at the bedside and think carefully before ordering tests.

Organisers say this is not an argument against technology, but for combining it with human judgment.

On October 31, S.R. Chandra will deliver the third K.V. Thiruvengadam Memorial Oration at Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, alongside a national conference on movement disorders.
