EU and China Agree to Cap Chinese Hybrid Imports at 350,000 a Year

The European Union and China have agreed to limit how many hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars China exports to the EU.

The annual cap will be 350,000 vehicles from December and will rise by 6% each year for four years.

The European Commission estimates that about 800,000 such cars will be imported from China this year, so the new limit would be a substantial reduction.

Chinese carmakers have gained sales in Europe, in part because hybrids face lower EU tariffs than fully electric cars.

The agreement is one step in efforts to address trade tensions between the two sides, but the EU is still preparing other measures to protect its industries.

The EU also says China will lower tariffs on some European exports, though the sources differ in how they describe the full terms of the agreement.

Further discussions are expected, and EU leaders are due to consider trade imbalances and possible measures at a meeting this week.
