Teachers turn Kondlur school campus into a plantation that earns income

A government high school in Kondlur, in Karnataka’s Tirthahalli taluk, has built a productive plantation across its eight-acre campus.

Over 11 years, teachers developed plots of areca and cashew, coconut trees, fruit plants and a garden.

The plantation’s earnings go into the School Development and Management Committee account, and in each of the last three years it has brought in between ₹50,000 and ₹2 lakh.

Acting headmaster Sampath H.V. and other teachers have taken on much of the work, with Sampath also paying some costs himself.

Students help with the plantation, which gives them practical learning as well as helping care for the grounds.

The school also has 93 students and has recorded 100% pass rates in its secondary school examinations; this year its average score was 91.4%.

Sampath hopes rising plantation income will help fund better facilities, including a science lab and computers, and improve mid-day meals.
