IU backs Ada Colau to lead a broad left-wing coalition
Spain’s United Left, known as IU, has backed Ada Colau to lead the Frente Amplio, a proposed coalition of left-wing forces outside the Socialist Party and people active in social movements.
IU says the coalition should bring together different groups and focus on the interests of the wider public.
The support comes as parties discuss how to work together for elections on November 29.
Podemos is close to an agreement with Catalonia’s Republican Left, led by Gabriel Rufián, that would mean not running a candidate in Catalonia.
Más Madrid has offered Podemos a place on its Madrid election list if it joins the coalition.
That list would be led by Emilio Delgado, with Mónica García in second place for the Madrid constituency.
IU says a united coalition is needed to defend existing rights and pursue further changes, including amid activism around housing.
IU says it will work to help build a broad, democratic coalition, but the parties’ discussions are still under way.
Izquierda Unida (IU) backed Ada Colau to lead the Frente Amplio, a proposed broad coalition of left-wing forces.
IU said the coalition should bring together forces to the left of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and mobilised civil society.
The party said Colau’s candidacy for prime minister could help broaden the project beyond individual party labels.
IU urged political forces to act responsibly and put the interests of the social majority first.
Spain’s next elections are scheduled for 29 November, and Podemos is close to an agreement with Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, according to the report.
