Spain says it plays an active role in planning companies held by SEPI
The Spanish government says it plays an active role in setting the strategic direction of companies in which the state-owned SEPI holds shares.
SEPI is a public holding company under the Finance Ministry, with stakes in firms including Telefónica, Indra, Redeia and Hispasat.
The government says it sets plans for companies it controls and management criteria for companies where it is a minority shareholder, guided by the public interest.
It says state involvement can help companies withstand crises, encourage investment and support the adoption of new technology.
The explanation was given in a written response to questions from Vox lawmakers about SEPI’s holdings and former officials serving on company boards.
It makes the government’s stated role in guiding these businesses explicit, including in sectors such as energy, defence and telecommunications.
The response comes amid political debate over state ownership and the management of major listed companies ahead of Spain’s general election on November 29.
