Tinubu sends bills on genocide and war crimes to Nigeria’s House
President Bola Tinubu sent two bills to Nigeria’s House of Representatives to strengthen the country’s laws on serious international crimes.
One bill would update Nigerian law to give effect to the Geneva Conventions and two Additional Protocols, which set protections and rules for armed conflicts.
These rules cover people including civilians, prisoners of war, and wounded or sick members of armed forces.
The other bill would give effect to the Rome Statute and provide for punishment of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes under Nigerian law.
It would also create a legal basis for Nigeria to cooperate with the International Criminal Court when the court’s jurisdiction applies.
The House and National Assembly will consider the bills, after Tinubu urged lawmakers to act quickly.
