Historian says Waffen-SS became a diverse force as it expanded in World War II
The Waffen-SS was part of the Nazi SS, not the regular German army.
It grew during World War II and recruited men from many countries, for different reasons.
Some joined willingly, while others were forced or had little choice.
Its international makeup did not change its role in Nazi crimes.
