Deutsche Bank chief backs pension reform and urges wider changes
Christian Sewing, the head of Deutsche Bank, says Germany can reform its economy but needs to move faster.
He expects the government’s pension reform to have a major effect if it passes the plan without changes, and says it could mean a high three-digit amount more in monthly pensions.
The interview does not give further details about how the pension increase would work.
Sewing also argues that Germany should reduce some subsidies, cut bureaucracy and make employment rules more flexible.
He says the government has recognised the need for change but must act more quickly and consistently.
The pension reform still needs to be passed unchanged for Sewing’s forecast to apply.
Deutsche Bank chief Christian Sewing said Germany’s pension reform could deliver a substantial increase in monthly pensions if the government passes it unchanged.
He warned the government against weakening the reform and called for wider changes to cut bureaucracy and subsidies.
Sewing also said employment protection should be loosened further, including for workers earning below €180,000 a year.
He said the government had identified what needed to be done but must act faster and more consistently.
