Dasara festivities begin at Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada

The annual Dasara Sharan Navaratri festivities began on October 11 at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam in Vijayawada, India.

The temple is on Indrakeeladri hill and is also known as the Kanaka Durga temple.

On the first day, the goddess appeared as Sri Bala Tripura Sundari Devi.

The temple says this form is associated with purity, knowledge and wisdom.

Devotees worship the goddess seeking knowledge, good sense and mental peace.

By 10 a.m., 17,576 devotees had visited the temple for darshan, or viewing of the deity.

The temple and government departments arranged for devotees to move through the site, and free darshan was available in all queue lines.

Rituals including Kumkumarchana and the initial rites for Chandi Homam also began.
