Rush use “Subdivisions” to check their sound before shows

Rush play “Subdivisions” at nearly every soundcheck on their Fifty Something Tour.

The tour began in June and is the band’s first since 2015.

The song tests microphones and keyboards, Geddy Lee said, letting the band check several things with one track.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson called it seemingly simple, but said its drum arrangement is complex.

New drummer Anika Nilles had to learn its many shifts and counts as she prepared for the tour.

Some repeated sections use the same notes for Lee and Lifeson but different drum parts for Nilles.

The song helps the band prepare for performances, while showing how much detail listeners may not notice.

North American dates continue through the end of 2026, with the tour due to head to Europe next year.
