More Germans are withdrawing conscientious objector applications

More people in Germany are asking to withdraw their status as conscientious objectors, which exempts them from military service.

The federal office responsible received 570 such applications in the first eight months of the year and expects 855 for the full year, above the 781 received last year.

At the same time, the office received 12,102 applications from people seeking conscientious objector status by the end of August.

The increase in withdrawals comes amid the war in Ukraine and changes in Europe’s security situation.

Germany introduced a new military service law on January 1 that requires young men to complete a questionnaire and undergo a medical examination, while recruitment remains voluntary.

People who withdraw their application or lose their status can be required to serve if conscription resumes or Germany faces a threat of attack or wartime conditions.
