RHI Magnesita plans to expand China research from its Shanghai hub

RHI Magnesita, an Austrian maker of high-grade materials used in industrial furnaces, is increasing its research and business investment in China.

In 2022, it established its China and East Asia headquarters in Shanghai.

The company says China’s shift towards greener industry is creating opportunities for new projects.

One focus is AI and robotics to automate work in heavy industries such as steel, cement and glass.

A Shanghai-developed automation solution has completed a trial and is expected to be released globally soon.

The company is also exploring ways to sort and reuse discarded furnace materials instead of sending them to landfill.

It says successful recycling could reduce global mineral extraction by 20% to 30%, but would require cooperation across the supply chain.

RHI Magnesita plans to use Shanghai to develop solutions for wider markets and bring overseas technologies to China.
