China proposes basic labour safeguards for 84 million platform workers

China has proposed its first formal rules to protect gig and platform workers, including delivery riders and ride-hailing drivers.

The draft covers pay, rest time and workplace safety for a group of about 84 million people.

But it sets only basic standards, not the fuller protections given to formal employees.

The proposal is open for public comment.
