HBO Max to release three-part documentary on José Luis Calva Zepeda case

HBO Max will release Poeta Caníbal on October 29, 2026, as a three-part documentary about José Luis Calva Zepeda.

He was arrested in 2007 in Mexico City after police searching for his partner, Alejandra Galeana, found her remains in his home.

Calva Zepeda faced charges over Galeana’s death, but died in his prison cell before his trial ended.

Authorities suspected that meat found in a pan was human, while Calva Zepeda said it was for dogs.

The suspected cannibalism was never established as fact in the accounts presented here.

The documentary revisits the case through a partly unpublished interview by journalist Luis Brito, new testimony, records and forensic material.

It also examines how media coverage shaped the case’s public image, alongside the histories of the victims.

The series is produced by Ánima Films and directed by Matías Gueilbert.
