RJ Mitte’s Breaking Bad role widened disability representation on screen

RJ Mitte, the actor who played Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad, has died at 34.

He had cerebral palsy and also spoke publicly about disability and opportunity.

In the series, his character’s cerebral palsy was part of the story but did not define him.

The show, which began in 2008, cast an actor with cerebral palsy to play a character with the condition.

That helped make disabled actors more visible on television and showed audiences disabled people in ordinary roles.

Mitte also supported disability charities and created a foundation offering community grants in his Texas hometown.

His work encouraged disabled people to pursue acting and other creative careers, though advocates say there is still progress to make.
