Honda plans public-road tests of wireless charging technology in 2027
Honda has developed technology that can transfer electricity to vehicles as they drive over specially equipped roads.
It worked on the system with Japanese companies Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation.
Power units built into the pavement send energy to a receiver fitted in the vehicle, without cables or plugs.
The companies plan to begin public-road tests in Japan in fiscal 2027, which starts on April 1, 2027.
They expect the system could reduce how often vehicles need to stop to charge, with logistics and transport as an early focus.
Before wider use, they plan to test durability, performance at higher speeds, and safeguards against electromagnetic field leakage.
A test track is due to be built at Taisei’s facility in Tamura from late 2026, and the companies also plan to take part in a highway demonstration in Chiba.
Honda R&D, Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation plan to test wireless charging technology on public roads from Japan’s 2027 fiscal year.
The system is designed to transfer power from equipment embedded in roads to vehicles as they move.
The companies aim to reduce how often electric vehicles need to stop to charge, with logistics and transport as an initial focus.
They have tested equipment designed to withstand vehicles with a gross weight of about 20 tonnes.
A new test track is planned at Taisei’s Future Technology Field centre in Tamura from late 2026.
