Yemeni government forces say they killed 1,150 Houthi fighters

Yemen’s internationally recognised government says its Saudi-backed forces killed 1,150 Houthi fighters in operations across the country over 24 hours.

The government’s military spokesman also said the forces destroyed Houthi weapons stores and at least 180 vehicles.

The claims could not be independently verified.

The fighting is centred in part around Mocha and Dhubab, two coastal cities in southern Yemen.

The forces are seeking to retake areas near the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a key route for shipping entering and leaving the Red Sea.

The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and parts of northwestern Yemen since 2014, and both sides claim control of the shipping lanes near the strait.

Government forces say their ground troops are continuing to advance, while the fighting around the coastal cities continues.
