macOS 27 adds remote AppleCare log collection for managed devices
Apple’s macOS 27 adds a way for IT teams to collect diagnostic logs remotely when a managed device has a problem.
The feature is intended to help with AppleCare support cases, especially for issues that are hard to reproduce.
Before, IT staff often had to access the device in person or guide the user through collecting the logs.
That could take time, and the device’s condition might change before the logs were gathered.
Now, AppleCare provides a token for a support case, and IT can use it to start log collection through device management.
The logs are sent directly to Apple and attached to the case, while IT can check the collection and upload status.
On Macs, the user must approve both collection and upload; some other device types can collect logs without user involvement in certain settings.
Apple introduced remote log-collection commands in its 27 operating-system releases for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS.
IT teams can open an AppleCare case, obtain a token from AppleCare and send it to a device through their device-management system to trigger log collection.
Collected logs are uploaded directly to Apple and automatically attached to the support ticket.
Declarative management reports whether collection has started or finished, is awaiting user consent, or is uploading.
On macOS, users must consent to log collection and upload; on tvOS and Shared iPads, non-interactive collection is always available.
