Taiwan president says island values peace but will not give up freedom

Lai said Taiwan wants peace but will not give up its freedom.

China has increased military and political pressure on the island, which it claims as its territory.

Taiwan is spending more on defence, which Lai said is meant to deter war, not provoke it.

He said dialogue should happen on equal and respectful terms.
