Europa Donna calls for consistent care for metastatic breast cancer in Italy
Europa Donna Italia is calling for consistent care for metastatic breast cancer across Italy.
The group says breast care centres should follow national guidelines and international recommendations, including quality measures designed for advanced breast cancer.
It also wants women to receive dedicated, coordinated care that brings specialist treatment together with nursing, psychological, rehabilitation, nutritional and palliative support.
New treatments mean more women can live for longer with the disease, which is usually treatable but not curable.
Care should control the cancer and its symptoms while helping women maintain a good quality of life.
For the national awareness day on 13 October, the group’s network has organised more than 150 events across Italy, and landmarks are being lit in pink and fuchsia.

What people are saying
We believe it is a priority to draw the attention of health institutions to the need to guarantee, in breast centres, specific care pathways for women living with the most advanced form of breast cancer.
More and more women are living for extended periods with a form of cancer that, in most cases, remains incurable but treatable.
The goal of treatment must include controlling the disease, preventing and treating symptoms, and maintaining a good quality of life.
