SIMATS chancellor says sustainable healthcare must be affordable and accessible

SIMATS hosted The Hindu Sustainability Dialogues 2026 on healthcare, sustainability and artificial intelligence.

Chancellor N.M. Veeraiyan said sustainability means protecting human life and dignity while making quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all.

He cited a SIMATS app that helps patients distinguish between gastric problems and a possible heart problem, saying research should benefit society.

K. Ganapathy urged medical students to understand statistics and the limits of AI, including the risk that algorithms trained on Western data may not fit Indian conditions.

SIMATS sustainability dean Dhanraj Ganapathy said AI can carry biases and produce false information, and called for human responsibility, patience and compassion.

The event's two panels examined AI in healthcare and the role of human care, including questions of access, ethics and trust.
