SCI launches $720-million tender for six 8,000 TEU container ships

The Shipping Corporation of India, a big shipping company in India, wants to build six huge cargo ships.

These ships carry containers, the big metal boxes that move goods around the world.

Each ship can carry 8,000 containers at a time.

Building all six ships will cost about 720 million dollars, which is a very large amount of money.

The company is asking shipyards all over the world to build them.

But Indian shipyards get a special advantage: if a foreign shipyard makes the best offer, an Indian shipyard gets the first chance to match it.

This helps Indian shipyards win more work and learn new skills.

Indian shipyards that have never built this kind of ship can work with experienced foreign partners.

The government will also help pay some of the cost, covering 15 to 25 percent of each ship.
