Nims Camp Provides Free Heart Surgery to 19 Children
Doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences held a special heart-surgery camp for children.
Nineteen children, ranging from two months to 13 years old, received operations.
The children had heart problems they were born with.
More than 1,000 children were checked during the camp.
Doctors said 100 children may need surgery, including 20 who needed it urgently.
The operations would normally cost ₹15–20 lakh at private hospitals.
Government health programs paid for the surgeries so families did not have to pay.
Some children may need more operations later as they grow, and the camp also used ECMO, a machine that can support very sick patients.
Nineteen children aged two months to 13 years underwent complex congenital heart surgeries at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.
The paediatric cardiac surgery camp was held from September 6 to 12 by NIMS and a UK team led by Dr D. Ramana.
More than 1,000 children were screened, with 100 advised to undergo surgery and 20 needing urgent treatment.
Private hospitals typically charge ₹15–20 lakh for the procedures, which were provided free through Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The camp marked NIMS’s first use of ECMO support under Aarogyasri, with the government covering its roughly ₹2 lakh daily cost.
