K.D. Jadhav's Mortgage-Funded Bronze: India's First Individual Olympic Medal
Many years ago, a small but very strong wrestler named Khashaba Jadhav wanted to go to the Olympic Games in Finland for India.
Nobody in charge wanted to pay for his trip.
A kind college principal borrowed money against his own house to help, his coach got a bank loan, and people in his village gave small amounts of money.
Together they collected enough for his ticket.
Jadhav wrestled well in Finland and won a bronze medal — India's first individual Olympic medal after independence.
He won it even though a schedule mix-up made him lose two later bouts.
When he came home, he put on wrestling shows to earn money and paid everyone back.
That is why people still call him the 'Pocket Dynamo' and remember him as a hero of Indian sport.

His trip cost roughly ₹12,000, funded by Principal R. Khardikar's house mortgage (₹7,000), coach Govind Purandare's bank loan (₹3,000) and small village donations (₹2,000).
Selectors and state authorities refused support — Bombay Province Chief Minister Morarji Desai reportedly told him to 'contact us after the Games' — until Maharaja Yadavindra Singh of Patiala ordered fresh trials that he won.
A team official's scheduling mistake left him unprepared; he lost to eventual gold medallist Shohachi Ishii and Soviet wrestler Rashid Mammadbeyov but retained enough points for bronze.
He repaid the full ₹12,000 through paid exhibition wrestling matches across Maharashtra, later joining the Maharashtra Police and retiring as Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1983.
