PMC to Revive Pay and Park Scheme on Laxmi Road
Pune is a big city in India with lots of traffic.
Some of the traffic problems happen because people park their cars, scooters, and auto-rickshaws right on the road where parking is not allowed.
A group called the Pune Municipal Corporation, which is like the city government, has a plan to fix this problem.
The plan is called 'Pay and Park.'
It means drivers must pay a small amount of money to park in special marked parking spots.
The idea is that people will not leave their vehicles on the road if they have to pay.
The plan was first agreed to by the city leaders about eight years ago.
But it got delayed because the state government did not decide on it.
Now the city wants to try again.
City leaders will vote on the plan this week and next week.
If they approve it, the plan will first be tested on Laxmi Road, a busy shopping street in Pune.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has submitted a proposal to the Standing Committee to implement the 'Pay and Park' scheme on Laxmi Road and Airport Road.
The proposal will be taken up at the Standing Committee meeting on Thursday and, if approved, will go before the general body on 18 August for final approval.
The scheme aims to curb illegal and undisciplined parking, which is a major cause of traffic congestion in Pune.
Re-tenders were issued after no tenders were received for Laxmi Road, Balewadi High Street and Bibwewadi Road; the eventual tender was received at Rs 1,77,35,640 against a released tender worth Rs 2,92,61,904.
The first phase would be implemented experimentally on Laxmi Road, a major shopping and market area where shopkeepers, employees, four-wheeler drivers and auto-rickshaw drivers occupy road space.
