Mumbai’s suburban trains may be expanded in the future through a proposed MUTP-IV plan.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd.

has started a study to understand what improvements are needed.

The study will estimate how many people may use the trains in 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2047.

It will consider new railway lines, extra tracks and extensions of existing routes.

Officials will also examine longer platforms, more AC trains and improved signalling.

Around 40 stations may receive upgrades such as lifts, escalators and new foot overbridges.

Safety will be studied closely, including ways to prevent people from entering railway tracks.

The study will first identify possible projects, which will later be prioritised and developed into detailed reports.
