Gwalior Temple Unveils ₹120-Crore Royal Jewellery For Janmashtami
Every year, the Gopal Temple in Gwalior celebrates Janmashtami by dressing Radha and Krishna in royal jewellery.
The jewellery is worth more than ₹120 crore.
It has diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls and other precious stones.
One necklace has seven layers and many pearls and emeralds.
Radha’s crown is also very heavy.
The jewellery stays in a bank locker for most of the year to keep it safe.
Police and officials protect it when it is taken to the temple.
After the celebration, it is returned to the locker until the next Janmashtami.
A royal jewellery collection valued at over ₹120 crore was brought out for Janmashtami at Gwalior’s 1921-era Gopal Temple.
The ornaments decorate the idols of Radha and Krishna and include diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, topaz and pearls.
A seven-layered necklace contains 62 genuine pearls and 55 emeralds, while Radha’s crown weighs nearly three kilograms.
The jewellery is kept in a bank locker for most of the year and transported to the temple under tight security.
The collection was created as a royal offering after Madhavrao Scindia I built the temple in 1921, and the Gwalior Municipal Corporation has managed it since 2007.
