Akhilesh Rewrites SP's PDA Formula: P Now Stands for Pandit
A big political party in India called the Samajwadi Party has a special word, PDA, that stands for three groups of people it wants to help: backward classes, Dalits, and minorities.
The party's leader, Akhilesh Yadav, now says the first letter, P, can also mean Pandit, which is another name for Brahmins.
Brahmins are a community that has a lot of influence in the state of Uttar Pradesh, even though they are only about 10 to 12 out of every 100 voters.
The party wants more Brahmins to vote for them in the next big election in 2027.
Akhilesh talked about problems that some Brahmins say they face, like unfair treatment and attacks.
He also chose a Brahmin leader to run in a special city called Ayodhya, where a famous temple was built.
The party hopes to win more seats by adding Brahmins to the groups that already support them.
But the party must be careful not to upset the other groups that already like them.
This is a way of trying to make the party bigger and stronger for the next election.
Akhilesh Yadav said the 'P' in the Samajwadi Party's PDA now stands for Pandit, signalling a recalibration ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
PDA previously stood for Pichchra, Dalit and Alpsankhyak, the social coalition that helped the SP and INDIA bloc perform strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Akhilesh built a narrative of Brahmin grievance, citing the Shankaracharya controversy during the Maha Kumbh, an alleged assault on Vedic students, and the Vikas Dubey encounter.
The SP announced former Ayodhya MLA Pawan Pandey as its 2027 candidate from Ayodhya, a constituency symbolised by the BJP's Ram Temple.
Brahmins constitute roughly 10 to 12 per cent of Uttar Pradesh's electorate and have historically been among the state's most politically influential communities.
