Akhilesh Yadav Courts Brahmins in Uttar Pradesh Counter to BJP
Opinion | Why Akhilesh Yadav Is Suddenly Betting On Brahmins In Uttar Pradesh · NDTV

Akhilesh Yadav is a leader of a political party in India called the Samajwadi Party.

He wants his party to win elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Lately, he has been trying to get the support of Brahmin people, one of the many communities in India.

Brahmins are only a small part of the state's people, but they live in many different areas.

Because of that, they can help decide who wins in about one out of every four election areas.

For many years, most Brahmins voted for a different party, called the BJP.

That party has won many elections with Brahmin support, so Akhilesh Yadav hopes to convince Brahmins to support his party instead.

He held a big meeting with Brahmin leaders in Lucknow and said his party respects every caste.

He even said a letter in his party's plan now stands for 'Pandit', another word for Brahmins.

It will be difficult, because in the last election almost 9 out of 10 Brahmins voted for the BJP.
