In Kolkata, India, a company called Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers builds ships for the Indian Navy.

On Tuesday, August 11, the company launched a brand-new warship named Shruti.

Launching a ship means sending it into the water for the first time, often with special ceremonies.

Shruti is an offshore patrol vessel, a ship that patrols and protects the sea near a country's coast.

It is the second of four such ships the company is building; the first one, Sanghmitra, was launched in May.

Shruti is about 113 metres long and can sail for 8,500 nautical miles without refuelling.

This ship can guard offshore oil platforms, stop pirates and smugglers, rescue people, and help during natural disasters.

The company plans to deliver five warships to the Navy by the end of the 2026-27 financial year.

However, the company's chairman is worried that the Navy and Coast Guard haven't placed many new orders, though he hopes new corvette orders will help.

Quotes

Commander P R Hari

Retired commander, chairman and managing director of GRSE

“"Our core business is warship building. Once we have delivered the five warships, our order book for naval platforms will come down significantly. This is a matter of concern. However, I am sure that things will look up with the order for the Next Generation Corvettes."”
