Bengaluru residents may pay Rs 25,000 yearly for road parking

In Bengaluru, a big city in India, many people park their cars on the road outside their homes.

That can make streets crowded and hard for people to walk safely.

The Karnataka government has made a draft plan, called the Greater Bengaluru Authority (Parking) Rules, 2026, to manage street parking.

Under the plan, families would need a special permit to park on the road near their home.

The permit would cost up to Rs 25,000 a year, depending on the car: Rs 15,000 for a hatchback, Rs 20,000 for a sedan and Rs 25,000 for an SUV.

Only people whose homes have enough parking space, as required by building rules, could get the permit.

The permit would last one year, be linked to one car and its registration, and work only on roads close to the home.

Roads would have to keep enough space for traffic and for walking paths after a car is parked.

The plan also sets hourly fees for parking in other parts of the city and charges more when cars stay longer than two hours.

The government is asking people for suggestions before the rules become final.
