Kolkata’s Yellow Taxis Join the Digital Ride Era
Kolkata is known for its bright yellow taxis.
Now, people can book some of these taxis using an app called Yatri Sathi.
The West Bengal government introduced the app in July 2023.
It lets passengers book yellow and other metered taxis.
The platform says it does not take commission or add higher prices when demand rises.
The fare goes directly to the driver.
In October 2023, the government said more than 6,000 taxis had joined.
This gives traditional taxis a way to be part of app-based travel while keeping their familiar look.
Kolkata also continues to use cycle rickshaws for short trips and local deliveries.
Yatri Sathi, a West Bengal government platform, was introduced in July 2023 for yellow and other metered taxis.
The platform uses a direct-to-driver model and says it charges zero commission and does not impose surge pricing.
In October 2023, the state government said more than 6,000 of around 9,500 operational yellow and blue-white taxis had joined.
The platform aims to help traditional taxis compete as app-based cab services grow.
Cycle rickshaws also remain part of Kolkata’s transport network, serving short trips and local deliveries.
