FDA Shuts IIT Bombay Canteens, Suspends Five Club Licences
Food safety inspectors check restaurants and canteens to make sure the food people eat is clean and safe.
In Mumbai, these inspectors visited seven places that serve food.
They found big problems at many of them.
Some places did not have the special permission, called a licence, that food sellers need by law.
Two canteens at IIT Bombay were told to close because they had no licence.
Other places, like clubs and a restaurant, had insects, old food, and dirty kitchens.
Because of these problems, the inspectors suspended the food licences of five clubs.
One more place was told to stop serving food, and another got a warning to improve.
The businesses can only open again after they fix all the problems and follow the food safety rules.
Maharashtra FDA ordered two IIT Bombay hostel messes in Powai to close for operating without a valid food licence or registration under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Eat Nino in Dadar had its licence suspended over insect infestation, poor hygiene, and missing food and water testing and staff training records.
A special inspection drive on July 27, 2026 in Greater Mumbai covered seven establishments: five licences suspended, one told to cease operations, and one issued an improvement notice.
The five clubs whose licences were suspended are The Cricket Club of India Ltd, RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club and The Willingdon Sports Club.
Violations reported include cockroach and fly infestation, mouldy vegetables, expired food, poor storage temperatures, and an unlicensed caterer, M/s Nebula Catering Services, operating at MIG Cricket Club.
