Bengaluru Marathoner Dies of Suspected Cardiac Arrest at 31
A man named Aman Deep Singh Jagade was running a half-marathon in India when his heart suddenly stopped, and he passed away.
He was only 31 years old, a software professional and a seasoned athlete.
This made many people ask how a young, fit person's heart could just stop.
Doctors explain that some heart problems can hide even when a person looks healthy.
A normal check-up may not find these hidden problems.
They can include a heart muscle that is too thick or problems with the heart's electrical system.
When someone runs for a long time, the heart has to work very hard.
That hard work, along with heat, dehydration and tiredness, can trigger a dangerous heart rhythm in someone with a hidden problem.
Doctors say to watch for warning signs like chest pain, fainting or dizziness while exercising.
Being very fit does not mean the heart is perfect.
Aman Deep Singh Jagade, a 31-year-old software professional from Bengaluru, died of a suspected cardiac arrest on August 9 while completing a 21-km half-marathon at Nandi Hills.
The case has raised questions about how young, seasoned athletes can suffer sudden cardiac events despite appearing fit and healthy.
Routine screenings such as basic ECG, blood-pressure measurement and physical examinations are not designed to identify every possible heart abnormality.
Hidden conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, silent coronary artery disease, congenital coronary abnormalities and inherited rhythm disorders can go undetected.
Dr Shetty, lead cardiologist at Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru, recommends tests such as echocardiograms, CT angiograms, exercise testing and rhythm monitoring for runners.
